How to Skate

What will you learn?

Jeremy Rupke, along with his team of powerskating coaches, will teach you step by step the fundamentals of forward and backward skating. These stages are not only for beginners but also can provide improvement for intermediate and advanced skaters as well. The videos are set up sequential order for beginners but feel free to explore the page!

Stage 1: Hockey Stance

This is the perfect place to start for new players. Jeremy, alongside Scott Grover, covers the importance of the hockey stance. What's included in this stage? The importance of kneebend, shoulder and chest positioning and drills to keep your hockey stance while skating.

Stage 2: Edge Control

After grasping the hockey stance, it's time to work on your edges, more specifically your inside and outside edges. Strong balance comes from strong edge control. Jeremy goes through edge work drills for advanced players as well.

Stage 3: Forward Skating

Finally, it's time to get moving! Jeremy and Scott go through the mechanics behind a powerful stride. After mastering the stride, Scott has quick 3 minute video on how to tighten your turns. Remember to bend your knees and use your edges!

Stage 4: Hockey Stop

Now you know how to skate, but can you stop? Jeremy and Scott show you how to transition from a snowplow stop to a proper hockey stop.

Stage 5: Backwards Skating

Backwards skating can be a daunting skill but rest assured Jeremy and Scott break down the backwards stride with step by step instructions. After the basics, Scott has some tips for advanced players to power out of their backwards stance. Once you're comfortable with backwards skating, learn how to backwards stop and transition from forwards to backwards.

Stage 6: Crossovers

We saved the best for last: Crossovers. Learn why crossovers give you that extra speed and power to your game. Topics covered include: the overpush and underpush for both forwards and backwards crossovers.
